Tune in Tuesdays (5) Murakami’s Playlist
Tune in Tuesdays is hosted by Ginger over at GReads where we share the music we love, old and new.
At the moment, I am reading two books by Haruki Murakami and so of course I am listening to my Murakami playlist which contains many pieces of music and artists that he has mentioned in his books. If you haven’t read a Murakami (why not?) then you should know that music is quite important to him and he mentions quite a few artists and tracks throughout his books. I’ve got into the (quite expensive) habit of buying this music and sticking it on my MP3 player so I can listen whilst reading. I usually read and listen to music at the same time and usually try to match music to book if I can, but Murakami does make it much easier!
I’m going to share – not actually the music mentioned in the books I’m reading at the moment, but just a couple that are on my playlist which I’d count as personal favourites.
Five Spot After Dark comes from After Dark and started me off on this Murakami playlist because this piece of music to me epitomises what his books sound like. I never actually liked jazz or blues music of any kind before reading Murakami, but when listening to this whilst reading Murakami something just clicked for me. When I listen to this type of music nowadays, it makes me ‘feel’ Murakami.
Also on my playlist is Bob Dylan, which I downloaded for Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and I came to love Bob Dylan. My favourite of his is Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.

I’ll have to try jazz while readeing Norwegian Wood and the Wind Up Bird Chronicle for this year’s Murakami Reading Challenge!
By the way, here is a jazz radio station in Japan: http://tunein.com/radio/Musashino-FM-782-s8885/ that I listen to in the days, Eastern time USA. In the evenings here, I think they go to news. But days, there is a nice mix of smooth jazz and Brazilian jazz.
I hope you’ll enjoy Murakami with a bit of jazz, I think it really helps give the reading an extra dimension. and thanks for the link I’ll have to give it a listen as I read my Murakami books.
Great picks!

I really liked the first song! My sister just read Norwegian Wood so I’ll have to get a lend of it
Norwegian Wood is a wonderful book – I really ought to re-read that one too. Hope you’ll enjoy it if you do.
oh that was a nice little bit of jazz.. v moody
Ta Jon. You should join me and the others with Wind-up!
Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog!
What a great idea, having a Murakami play list! I have read only one Murakami book, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and did enjoy it. But I find myself a bit daunted by him. Having said that I would like to read more books by him.
Oh my word, I love this. I recognized the first track, but not the second. I was one of those strange kids who liked listening to the old old older stuff… still do, as a matter of fact. Thanks for sharing!
